DAVAO City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) reported that they have noted 90 percent participation rate of all the children four years old and below within the city in their Early Child Care and Development (ECCD) Program.
CSSDO Technical Staff Early Child Care Development Program Elena Gabaton said the city has 555 day care centers.
"The total population served in day care centers are 34,000. This is only for public [day cares] and does not include private," she said.
Gabaton added that around last year they only served 30,000.
She said there are some hesitations from parents to enroll their children to daycares due to the distance of the schools from their houses and the mentality that the children cannot learn as early as three years old.
Gabaton added that in a bid to bridge these concerns by the parents they have created a home-based ECCD program, where the day care activities will be conducted at a volunteer's house. Currently, CSSDO has 112 volunteers for this program.
Another initiative of the CSSDO is the Parent Teaching Other Parents (PTOP) wherein volunteers teach parents to facilitate early childhood learning in their own homes.
"The parents themselves provide learning activities during their regular activities like during meals, the mothers will ask children what is the shape of the plate or she will ask how many spoons will be used, how many members of the family will eat. By doing that the children can become ready for school," she said.
