Man leaves family, pays up

A FATHER of two could spend up to 24 years in jail for abandoning his two children, while boasting of his twin sons from another woman.

Judge Ester Veloso found the father guilty of two counts of violation of Republic Act 7610, or the Anti-Child Abuse Law.

Apart from jail term, Veloso, of the Regional Trial Court branch 6, also ordered the father to pay each of his children P50, 000 as moral damages.

“The acts of the accused in abandoning his children and depriving them of what they deserved under the law constitutes a violation of RA 7610,” read Veloso’s nine-page decision.

Sun.Star Cebu is withholding the father’s name, pursuant to the confidentiality provision of the Anti-Child Abuse Law.

The father, of the City of Naga, Cebu, was charged with two counts of violation of the Anti-Child Abuse Law for abandoning his two children, then 15 and 14.

The convict’s two children and his wife testified during the hearing of the case.

His daughter said that his father did not support her mother when he left her for another woman when she was only five years old.

One time, the girl said that her father invited her to his house and introduced her to her step-brothers.

She said she was hurt because she never felt the love he showed to his twin sons. The daughter is living with her mother and his brother in the City of Naga, Cebu.

The father’s son, 14, also testified against his father. He recalled that his mother was the only one who provided for their needs since their father left them when he was only four years old.

The boy said his father even introduced him to his other woman. He admitted he hated his father since “he loved his illegitimate son more than his legitimate son.”

The mother, a public school teacher, said she solely provides everything for her children after her husband left them for another woman. (GMD)
