Lab to boost Davao Region's halal industry

THE Halal Verification Laboratory will help increase the halal market in Davao Region and neighboring areas, said Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (MICCI) official.

MICCI President engineer Samad S. Pangandaman said there are labeled products in the market that some Muslims are still in doubt unless they are really tested and determined to be halal. Pangandaman added this doubt and fear of Muslims in consuming haram food without intent will be lessened because of a Halal Laboratory in the region.

“This Halal Laboratory will support the halal certifiers when they will certify the product, especially processed food, then they will submit the product to the laboratory to examine the contents of the product to check if there is no haram. Because these are processed food. We can never tell,” he said.

He added in Mindanao the only halal certifying bodies can be found in Soccsksargen and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm), both of which are quite far from Davao Region.

“There are companies here who would like to be certified as halal. If that will be launched, this can be used by the local certifier here locally and they won’t need to go to farther places,” said Pangandaman adding that with the advent of a verification laboratory, more halal products will be developed. He hopes that Muslims who are going to buy locally-certified halal products will recommend it to their other friends and even to Muslim visitors from other countries.

“It will increase tremendously the market of the halal product, not only here in Davao but also the neighboring provinces in Mindanao as well as other countries in the BIMP-Eaga, which Davao is the gateway of the Philippines to the regional growth area. Because they are frequently coming in here in Davao, if there is a promotion that we really have this halal laboratory that certifies, then it would really be a big help,” he said.

Currently, there are already chosen products that are being exported from Davao City to Malaysia and other parts of Indonesia.
