Enormous eats

HAVE you ever been so hungry, you swore you could eat a whole (insert choice of food) in one sitting? With these gut-busters, you might want to rethink your statement. We’ve rounded up some of the island’s biggest bites for when size does matter, and we seriously think you’re going to need the entire neighborhood to battle these beasts that are not only huge in size but also in flavor.

The Big Tony Burrito
Where: El Taquito

The Mexican staple gets supersized at El Taquito, so much so that it weighs in at a whopping three kilos. Layer upon layer of beef barbacoa, eggs, beans, Mexican rice, Cheddar cheese, mozzarella, sour cream, shredded lettuce, salsa and green bell peppers are stuffed in a flour tortilla, forming a formidable foe for the hungry customers willing to take on this colossal burrito. A few squirts of its spicy house sauce give it a kick. El Taquito’s returning customers including expats can vouch for its authenticity, while its Best of Cebu 2016’s Best Mexican Joint award can back up that claim.

Coppa Bambino
Where: Gelatissimo

Gelatissimo has close to 50 flavors and choosing just one, two, or thee takes a great deal of effort. The closest one can get to trying all the classic and quirky flavors is tackling this towering treat! Thirty-two scoops of one’s personal picks are made even more indulgent with gobs of whipped cream, brownie chunks, wafers, wafer cones and sticks, a drizzle of chocolate syrup and a sprinkle of nuts. All flavors are churned fresh in-store using all-natural ingredients. Dairy-free fruit sorbets, chocolate sorbet, gluten-free, nut-free, and 98 percent sugar-free flavors are available as well.

The Mighty Ton Burger and Milky Way Shake
Where: Casa Verde

People pack in to Casa Verde for its comforting classics like Brian’s Ribs and Death by Chocolate. Why not give its behemoth burger and monstrous milkshake a shot? The Mighty Ton Burger takes a kilo of USDA tenderloin patty, blankets it with an overload of American cheese, crowned with 125 grams of bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, sauteed onions, mushrooms, and then stacked between slices of its homemade manhole cover-like buns. The 12-inch burger is served with one’s choice of barbecue, cheese or sour cream fries. Leave some room for the Milky Way, a thick chocolate milkshake that is sure to bring all the boys to the yard.

Tomahawk Steak
Where: Azure Beach Club, Crimson Resort and Spa Mactan

Closely resembling a single-handed ax (hence the name), this cut of cow is already show-stopping on its own. Cook it to medium rare on a Wood Show broiler, top it with orange and garam masala-laced butter, and you’ve got yourself 1,200 grams of U.S. tomahawk beef that is worth its weight in gold. Azure completes this carnivorous creation with sides of sauteed vegetables, garlic noodles with nori, and its signature sauces—lemongrass salsa, green sambal, and bulgogi sauce. It is pure primal pleasure in every succulent piece.

Smokegasbord
Where: Bleachers Barbecue

Those who are jonesing for some smoky sensations will think they have died and gone to barbecue heaven with this sampler tray that’s piled high with
2,000 grams of the joint’s signature smoked meats. Slabs of slow-cooked, rubbed-the-right-way beef brisket, pork spare ribs, chicken leg quarter, smoked kawali, and a generous portion of pulled pork are a meat lover’s dream, but at Bleachers Barbecue, these are heaped into meaty reality with the welcome addition of smoked scallops and smoked squid. The Smokegasbord is good for four to six persons, depending on one’s appetite.
