Iloilo City to finalize disaster plan

ILOILO City Government will finalize its disaster risk reduction and management action plan within this month as Japanese trainers will come over on November 9-12, 2015 to conduct a training in the city.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said the Japanese people are highly trained in disaster risk management and independent for their personal needs during disasters like earthquake, floods, typhoons and other natural calamities.

He added that the trainers committed to provide equipment and tools like early warning devices, ambulance, and others to Iloilo City.

The City Government has sent some local officials and employees to Yokohama Japan to study disaster management that focused on Community-Based Adaptation and Resilience against Disasters sponsored by the CityNet Yokohama and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Mabilog, who also joined the training in Japan, observed that the country's underground reservoir for rainwater harvesting is built with a water pump and natural drainage with booster pumps is encouraged for low-lying areas.

He added that new schools that will be built by the city must be two stories or higher to accommodate disaster evacuees and must have a generator and other life-saving equipment.
