Midwife gives her side on infant deaths

THE midwife who gave the vaccines to two babies who later died returned to work at the Pajac Barangay Health Center in Lapu-Lapu City yesterday.

Grecilda Malingin admitted that she asked for one week’s leave of absence after the incident because she was hurt by accusations that she was responsible for the deaths of three-month-old Ghirvaughn Mcreign Limpangog and four-month-old Ayesha Mae Suson.

Limpangog had received a pentavalent vaccine, while Suson got a pneumoccal conjugate vaccine last Nov. 8. They both died last Nov. 11.

Their families both believed that the vaccines killed them.

“I was really sad. I could not explain how I felt when I learned that the two babies died. I was really down when the people accused me that I was the reason they died. Their deaths were not related to the vaccine injected to them,” she said in Cebuano.

Malingin, who has been a midwife for 33 years, works under the Lapu-Lapu City Health Office. She has been assigned at the Pajac Health Center for 25 years.

Whenever she gives vaccines to babies, Malingin said she always conducts a pre-conference and post-conference. She asks parents if their child is ill before injecting the vaccine. She also tells them what to do if the child suffers a fever after the injection.

She assured that the vaccines were secured and in their proper place before injecting them to Limpangog and Suson.

“I followed all necessary procedures. No one wants to put their patient in danger. The vaccines given by the Department of Health are given for the children’s protection and not to kill them “ she said in Cebuano.

Last week, the family of Limpangog filed a complaint before the DOH to have the incident investigated.
