Limlingan: Political positioning for 2019

THE 2019 elections is quite far yet. However, political groups are now into their positioning with the organization and strengthening of their parties who will determine the candidates they are fielding in the next local elections in the race for provincial political positions.

The administration party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Laban (PDP-Laban) said that it will “most probably” be pitching Pampanga 4th District Rep. Juan Miguel Bondoc as its gubernatorial bet against incumbent provincial Vice-Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda should the latter be running for the said post.

For some, the party is perhaps “testing the waters” and might be soliciting reactions, comments or opinions on the possible Delta-Rimpy political joust. Of course, public views are important in formulating political tactics and strategies.

Amid the said possibility, the camp of Bondoc intimated that if former President and now Pampanga 2nd District Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo would gun for the governorship, then Cong. Bondoc would back out from the gubernatorial race. As a kapampangan, there is this respect and reverence for the former President.

Speaking of the former President, she has joined PDP-Laban recently. Her affiliation with the said party is viewed as a move to show gratitude and support to President Rodrigo Duterte. Such is an important move of the political icon and is a major development in local politics.

Now, if the Delta-Rimpy gubernatorial battle would push through, we can say that it will be a good fight between two strong contenders. Assuming Delta would have all the votes from the 2nd District of the province and Rimpy would gather all votes from the 4th District, the 1st and the 3rd Districts would be transformed into political battle grounds as we will decide on who will be the next governor of Pampanga.

Both candidates have the said districts as their bailiwicks. They have the great support of the residents of their respective “territories”. The deciding towns then would be those outside the 2nd and the 4th. In this way, the two great political icons would have to work hard to get the higher number of votes outside their comfort zones.

In addition, they would need the support of the mayors, the vice-mayors, the councilors, the punong barangays and the kagawads of every town of the 1st and 2nd districts to edge each other in the polls.

While it may still be far away, they may perhaps plant now the seeds that will bear fruits by 2019 for their political plans.

Meanwhile, Bacolor Mayor Jomar Hizon “may be” the running mate of Rimpy. He will provide better support to the Bondoc camp in terms of votes and logistics because of his experience and opulent campaign chest. On the other hand, he too may likewise run for the governorship since he has the capacity to do so.

By this time, Delta is perhaps pondering on who will be his running mate who is far better than Hizon supposing the latter would team with Rimpy and supposing the Vice-Governor would be aiming for the governorship.

It will be a good fight just in case.
