Hao settles for silver in NY

JAN Hao of Deftac Ribeiro Davao fell short of the gold medal but salvaged the silver in the recenty-concluded International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) New York BJJ Pro held at the City College of New York.

Hao lost to Paulo Yoshinori Kawahira of Vitor Shaolin BJJ in the gold medal match of the purplebelt featherweight division.

But Hao earlier subdued Brunoi Flores Barcelos of Fight Sports Brasil to secure the silver of the event that attracted some 100 BJJ artists worldwide.

The 31-year-old Dabawenyo also tested his mettle in the openweight after winning the silver in the lower division but unfortunately lost his first match.

Hao, in a Facebook chat with SunStar Davao, said he succumbed to what BJJ practitioners called 50/50 position.

"Practice error. Mao na ang position na wala nako na drill to escape (That's the position I failed to drill)," said Hao, adding that he only slept four hours due to excitement.

Hao will take a break from training and will resume next year for the Tokyo International Open and Masters World Asia slated in March.
