2,000 security forces to be deployed for Asean jamboree

MORE than 2,000 security personnel are set to be deployed to secure some around 30,000 delegates from different countries during the 6th Association of Southeast Asian Nation (Asean) Boy Scout Jamboree slated on November 27 to December 2 at the Energy Park in Apokon, Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

Police Superintendent Julius Borja, Deputy Provincial Director for Operations (DPDO) of Davao del Norte Provincial Police Office (DNPPO), said on Wednesday, November 22, they are all set for the security coverage and has already laid out plans on addressing threats and ensuring the safety of the tens of thousands of participants.

Borja said as of Wednesday, November 22, they conducted accounting of its personnel who will be designated in the areas during the event and on Thursday, November 23, they will begin the soft deployment in different areas considering that some participants are expected to arrive in the city on Thursday.

“Nakalatag na ang lahat ng ating preparations. Nandiyan na yong mga Special Task Group na pini-prepare natin for security, peace and order,” Borja said.

He added that they are closely coordinating with various law enforcement agencies and stakeholders and that a security plan is already in place.

“Meron din tayong mga nakaprepare na especially on the convoy from Davao International Airport (DIA) going to Tagum City. All and all we are already prepared with the unified effort of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), AVSEU, HPG who is in-charge of the convoy,” he said.

Initially, they are expecting to have 25,000 delegates coming from 16 countries in Asia. As of November 20, based on the monitoring of the National Boy Scouts of the Philippines, they cited that delegates who confirmed has reached to 29,000 including the scout masters from international teams. The Philippine delegation alone reached 19,641 participants.

“We cannot deny the fact that so we are considering three areas yon gating criminality threats, insurgency threats and terrorism. We are considering that katatapos palang ng Marawi baka may mga spillover kaya isa din yan sa kinonsider natin on the preparations,” he added.

Based on the Department of Education memorandum, “the Jamboree aims to provide a progressive, safe and enjoyable learning environment for the Scouts in order to enhance their physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual potentials. At the end of the Jamboree, the participants should be able to promote Asean Community and Solidarity.”

During the activity, it added, the boy scouts will undergo projects, programs and activities which will cater to the fulfillment of the requirements of selected merit badges and scout ranks under the Advancement Scheme.
