Hired killer dies in shootout with cops

AN ALLEGED hired killer was killed while another managed to escape in a shootout with police officers in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, the police reported Thursday.

The Zamboanga del Norte Police Provincial Office identified the fatality as Rene Carcillas, 49, a resident of Diquis village, Manukan town.

The police said the shootout happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the village of Balok, Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte.

The police said the shootout ensued after Carcillas allegedly pulled a gun and shot the policemen who stopped them at a checkpoint.

The policemen were not hit and managed to return fire.

Carcillas was fatally hit and fell from the motorcycle but his companions managed to escape.

Carcillas didn't make it alive to the Sindangan District Hospital.
