Night market extension still a go

BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan announced jeepney trunk line operators are not opposed to the use of Perfecto Street for the night market extension.

The mayor said after a meeting with him, the jeepney trunk line operators and drivers there seems to have no problems with earlier proposed extensions despite a standing petition by the same group weeks ago.

“They agreed as long as the night market extension starts at 10 p.m. at Perfecto Street and they can use parts of Lake Drive,” Domogan said.

Earlier, Geoffrey Tongawan, representing jeepney associations along Perfecto Street said current operations of the night market is already causing discomfort for jeeps plying the Harrison Road–Lake Drive area and lamented the planned expansion of the night market will further disrupt operations.

The petition was earlier backed by 1,554 oppositors composed of officers, operators, drivers and commuters of Kias –PMA, Scout Barrio, Balsigan, Campo Sioco, Green Water, Military Cut off, Gabriela Silang, Bakakeng Norte, Sur and Central against the Baguio City Market Authority (BCMA) which recently approved the night market extension along Perfecto Street.

Domogan said night market area at the Harrison road as well as the extension at Perfecto street is only temporary as the peripherals of the Melvin Jones is eyed to be the permanent site for the daily night market.

The mayor said the jeepney group will be given authority to expel erring night market vendors who set up earlier than the scheduled time.
