TWO SunStar Cagayan de Oro journalists are among this year’s crop of journalists recognized by award-giving bodies for exemplary work.
A photograph by photojournalist Erwin Mascarinas titled "Catch of the Day" won this year’s Agricultural Photo of the Year in the 11th Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards held at Fairmont Hotel, Makati City last November 17, 2017. The photograph was taken in General Santos City and shows a man carrying a tuna on his shoulders. It appeared on the business page of SunStar Cagayan de Oro on August 25, 2017.
Mascariñas is the first photojournalist from Mindanao to win the photo category of the annual BrightLeaf awards in its 10 years of awarding photojournalists.
He also won in the same category last year.
The Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards was launched in 2007 by Philip Morris Philippines Manufacturing Inc. (PMPMI).
It is today continued by PMFTC Inc. (PMFTC), the company created on February 25, 2010, through a business combination between Philip Morris Philippines Manufacturing Inc. (PMPMI) and Fortune Tobacco Corporation (FTC). SunStar Cagayan de Oro columnist Nef Luczon won big in this year’s Mindanao leg of the Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA).
Luczon is Columnist of the Year for 2017 for his column ‘Environment, Tourism and Mt. Apo’ published March 28, 2017.
Luczon’s "Disaster Response: CDO Flood Update Series" was also cited as Social Media Campaign of the Year.
The GMEA also named Luczon as Social Media Advocate of the Year for his hashtags #Media Literacy, #ResponsibleCitizenJournalism, and #MediaEthicsAndEtiquette.
Mascarinas, meanwhile, was among the shortlisted finalists (top 6) for Reporter of the Year for his story ‘"Caraga tagged as major research site for amphibians and reptiles" published in SunStar CDO on October 19, 2016.
The Globe Media Excellence Awards was held in Davao City’s Marco Polo Hotel last November 22, 2017.
