DOT bats for clean toilets

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Cordillera region is aiming to have clean toilets along tourism highways.

DOT regional director Marie Venus Tan said a benchmarking for proper cleaning as well as maintenance of existing comfort rooms will be done.

The project dubbed as “Rev the Toilets Campaign” under the tourism department aims to put into standard all private and public toilets along tourist highways to make travel easier.

Set this week, the project will be rolled out with the first phase traversing the Halsema Highway covering Baguio-Sagada and Bontoc-Banaue and the Baguio-Kayapa road.

Tan said the DOT with the Department of Public Works and Highways with local government units will be collaborating on how to improve the situation of public and private toilets along the highways in a bid to provide the public with clean, safe and tourism friendly stops.

Article 1755 of the New Civil Code of the Philippines stating common carriers should ensure their passengers’ safety as far as human care and foresight can provide, as well as Presidential Decree No. 522, saying it a mandate to provide adequate rest areas for travelers.

Along the Halsema road there are now functional comfort rooms for tourists plying the area with projects undertaken by respective government units.

The DPWH likewise included the construction of comfort rooms as one of their projects.

The program is under the Rev -Bloom campaign which is a collective collaboration and synergy of government agencies, local government units and academic institutions, private sector groups and members of the community.

DOT's REV Campaign is geared towards a re bloom, re green and rehabilitation.
