Bacolodnons urged to support World Aids Day

THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution enjoining Bacolodnons to support the observance of World Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) Day on December 1.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Em Ang, stated that the World Health Organization has designated December 1 of every year to be the observance of World Aids Day to spread awareness of the Aids pandemic caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.

Ang noted that as of October 2017, there are already 304 recorded cases HIV/Aids in Bacolod City, based on the report of Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital HIV-AIDS Action Core Team.

“There is a need for all Bacolodnons to support the observance of the World Aids Day to raise public awareness on HIV/Aids and prevent the spread of the disease in Bacolod City,” Ang said.

Meanwhile, Ang also urged Mayor Evelio Leonardia to convene the Bacolod local Sexually Transmitted Infections/HIV/Aids council in accordance with City Ordinance No. 468, Series of 2008, in view of the recent increase in STI/HIV/Aids cases in Bacolod.

Ang said there is a need to convene the Bacolod Local STI/HIV/Aids Council to effectively implement intervention program activities which will prevent the spread of the HIV/Aids and other STIs by promoting public awareness about the cause, modes of transmission, consequence and means of prevention and control, through a comprehensive education and information campaign.
