Consultant urges Mandaue: Invest in infra projects

A FOREIGN property consultant urged the Mandaue City Government to improve its infrastructure to cope with the surge in property investments and developments in the next few years.

Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. (JLL) Philippines chair Lindsay Orr said the addition of Gatewalk Central, a 17.2-hectare mixed used project of the AboitizLand and AyalaLand in Barangay Subangdaku, and the 20-hectare Mandani Bay of HongKong Land and Taft Properties, requires good infrastructure to complement these communities.

Both Gatewalk Central and Mandani Bay will house condominiums, hotels, and commercial and office developments over the next five to 10 years.

“Having more infrastructure will surely help Mandaue City’s potential, particularly in the office and township developments,” said Orr, speaking before local government officials and members of the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry during the Invest Mandaue 2017 forum at the Oakridge Pavilion on Friday.

The edge

Like Cebu City with its Cebu Business Park and Cebu IT Park, Mandaue City, which is widely identified as an industrial hub in the province, is set to become a home for IT work and tourism, Orr said.

In addition, he said Mandaue City’s “business-friendly” regulations and its having one of the lowest property taxes in the country will help attract more investments into the city.

Nevertheless, traffic congestion and flooding are two of the most pressing challenges that the city faces.

Mandaue City is the country’s furniture capital, and contributes 40 percent to the total Cebu exports, said JLL.

With 27 barangays, Mandaue City accounts for seven percent of the total population of Cebu. The city has an area of 2,518 hectares. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 362,654.

Its proximity to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and the Cebu International Port has been a key factor that has taken the city to where it is today.
