Jose Mari Chan in concert

A BENEFICIARY concert organized by Zonta Club of Cebu 1, which is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary with “Celebrate Life: Golden Years of Service and Music,” was held at the Pacific Grand Ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino last Nov. 23 featuring popular balladeer Jose Mari Chan, who is also celebrating his golden anniversary this year.

The event began with production numbers from different Cebuano talents as front acts: Benedicto College performers, University of San Jose-Recoletos students, Clifford Gawchua, Knapsack dancers and Zonta Club’s Bessie Villamor, who played the role of Evita Peron in a production.

Cebuana singer Anna Fegi also performed with Brown Academy students.

Chan serenaded concertgoers with his popular songs, among them: “Afraid for Love to Fade,” “Deep within My Heart,” “Love to Last a Lifetime,” “Beautiful Girl” and “Tell Me Your Name.”

And it wouldn’t be a Chan concert without his popular Christmas songs.

He recently released his latest album, “Going Home to Christmas,” which carries 22 Christmas songs dedicated to all overseas Filipino workers who have been missing their families especially during Christmas season.

One of the highlights of the concert was the special participation of Chan’s three sons. Chan said his sons are already following in his footsteps with Joe and Michael already part of the band called Generation.

In his 50 years in the music industry, Chan hopes to have many more musical years ahead.

“When you’re doing something that you love, when you’re doing something from your passion, you don’t get tired. I love what I’m doing. I enjoy it,” he said. (Liza Marie Caube, USJ-R Intern)
