Concert for a cause fuses ‘rock and roll’ with Christmas spirit

CEBUANOS were treated to a night of singing and dancing to great homegrown and international tunes. The “Rockin’ Around: A Christmas Concert for A Cause” event was held last Nov. 25 at the Pacific Grand Ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino captured the locals’ love for a little rock and roll with their Christmas concerts.

Local highlights include artists like the ABBA Choir who sang the Bisaya Christmas hit “Kasadya Ning Takna-a” and Rev. Fr. Jonas Mejares and Rev. Fr. Romeo “Dondong” Desuyo who sang Queen’s classic hit “We Will Rock You.” The Maka Girls also brought their tri-rock harmonies to Ronil Vincent’s “Gugmang Maka.”

One could only observe both the young and the old in perfect bobbing unison, as if agreeing that the first set of acts did in fact keep their promise of some classic rock and roll music. Soon after, the energy that followed pushed people at the edge of their seats before exploding in screams as celebrities Kim Chiu and Yeng Constantino finally took the stage.

Favorite tracks like Kim’s “Mr. Right” and Yeng’s “Chinito” got the audience to leave their inhibitions behind, transforming into a loud crowd. However, a chilling hush blanketed the venue when Yeng finally sang her hit song “Ikaw.”

One could almost hear a pin drop as Yeng sang with passion and devotion. Her emotion flowed from the stage and the audiece could almost feel it.

By the end of the concert, Kim with all the other performers joined Yeng on stage, ending the show with “Pakso sa Pinas.” Indeed, the show proved that the Christmas spirit indeed breathes life into people, reinvigorating them with that Holiday cheer. “Rockin’ Around: A Christmas Concert for A Cause” was presented by Shepherd’s Voice Cebu Inc.
