Korean envoy: ‘Bacolod City is safe’

CONSUL General Oh Sung-Yong of the Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Cebu said on Wednesday that thousands of Koreans enroll study English in Bacolod because it is a safe city.

Yong, along with Senior Consular Officer Gobui Hong and Consular Agent Lee Kue Bong, paid a courtesy call to Mayor Evelio Leonardia at the Bacolod City Government Center Wednesday, November 29.

Yong said more than 1,000 Koreans are in the city to learn English.

“Bacolod and Korea have a good relationship and I opted to promote more relationship with Bacolod,” he said.

He added that Bacolod is “very near” Korea and they expect more Koreans to visit the city and study English.

In terms of academic system, Hong said that Bacolod is “very good” compared to other cities.

“We hope that by next year, Korean students in Bacolod will increase,” he said.

Yong said that in 2016, about 1.5 million Koreans visited the Philippines, but this year, it decreased because of the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.

Leonardia said the statement of the Korean consul validates the situation in Bacolod that it is a safe city.

“I am happy that it comes from an independent observer. These people are the kind that know what they are talking about, that statement hopefully will reverberate to the whole Korean community,” he said.
