Batad roofs turn green

BANAUE, Ifugao -- Green roofs now adorn the environs of the scenic Batad rice terraces.

Close to 100 homes with galvanized sheets as roofs have been transformed to a calm pale green hue, matching the grandeur of the famous rice terrace.

Davies paints has partnered with the Department of Tourism in the Cordillera for the painting projects in the region starting with the concluded StoBoSa murals in La Trinidad, Benguet.

The painting of roofs is part of the DoT and Davies Paints project under the Rev - Bloom flagship of the department with homes in the view of terraces aimed to be painted green, in a bid to blend with the colors of the mountains.

The painting of the terrace homes will be done by next year.

The DOT is embarking on the enhancement of existing tourism sites and identifying new tourism products anchored on community based travel programs and tours by providing capacity building, trainings on home stay, eco guiding, culinary aimed at elevating sustainable standards of services in all tourism destinations.

The homes lining the various terraces have been a subject for debate with renovation and design not following a standard and are up to individual homeowner discretion.

Tourism has become one of the leading sources of income for the people of Ifugao, the area being one of the top destinations in the country today, because of the Batad Rice Terraces Bangaan Rice Terraces, Nagadacan Rice Terraces, Mayoyao Rice Terraces and Hapao Rice Terraces.

In the past, Senator Loren Legarda has asked for cogon roofs for village huts in the Bangaan Rice Terraces, a project which she has funded a total of P2.9 million.

However, the senator was left dissatisfied when she visited the area and saw galvanized iron roofs, instead of the traditional cogon.
