Trash collector faces theft raps

THEFT charges were filed before the Bacolod City Prosecutor's Office on November 29 against a garbage collector.

Senior Inspector Armilyn Vargas, spokesperson of Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), identified the suspect as Ruel Canja, 21, of Barangay Felisa.

Canja was on duty together with his other co-workers when he spotted a brown shoulder bag containing a cellular phone and a Go Pro camera.

He kept the gadgets and threw the other items inside the bag.

Meanwhile, on November 27, a cashier of the Municipality of La Castellana in Negros Occidental, was robbed by an unidentified man while riding a passenger jeepney on Gatuslao Street in Barangay 11, Bacolod City.

A collection amounting to P200,000, gadgets amounting to P25,000, and other documents were carted away by the robber. The cash was supposed to be used for the maintenance of the town's housing project.

Vargas said Canja was arrested in a dumpsite in Barangay Felisa around 12 noon Tuesday.

However, he cannot be considered as the primary suspect because the cash was not recovered from him.

However, police filed a case against him because under the law, any person who found items or properties and failed to return the same to the rightful owner or proper authorities, is liable for the crime of theft.

"The primary suspect in the crime is still unidentified," Vargas said.

A lie detector test and electronic examination will be conducted as part of the investigation, she added.
