Padilla: Cadets’ day at Burnham Park yuletide presentation set

LAST Friday, December 1, the 44TH Anniversary Edition of Silahis ng Pasko sa Baguio started to spread its caring and sharing set of activities in the warmest spirit of the Christmas season in the city.

Over 4,000 City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) Daycare Center and PHASES Learning Center pupils, accompanied by their parents, came together in their various creative costumes to portray the Nativity Scene. Children dressed as the characters from the Nativity, and other spectacularly artistic costumes marched happily down Session Road to give meaning and display the spectacle that is the Annual Christmas Childrens’ – Parents’ Mardi Gras which ended at the Melvin Jones Grandstand for the formal opening ceremony of the multi-awarded Yuletide Season celebration.

City Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Congressman Mark Go joined us the program as our guests of honor. The event highlight was the coronation ceremony of the winners of the Little Miss and Mr. Silahis ng Pasko sa Baguio led by the four-year-olds Althea May Cayabag from barangay Loakan and Shan Kipsoer Fernandez, who hails from City Camp DCC. Certainly, it was a great moment for the pageant winners and their proud parents, in particular and all the participants and supporters of the Christmas season offering.

Due to limited time and space, Kafagway Roundup will come up with a pictorial essay with more details about the opening day bonanza of the Christmas season project, courtesy of the National Correspondents Club of Baguio (NCCB), the CSWDO, and the local city government.

Meanwhile, let us focus our attention to the Philippine Military Academy, AFP "Cadets" Day| at Burnham Park” happening on Sunday, December 3. The much anticipated event will be on the center-stage at the main park at 10 o’clock in the morning, showcasing the talent and skills of the elite Cadet Silent Drill Company from the Long Grey Line at Fort del Pilar, Loakan. The Cadets’ care and share program will showcase smartness and good order, razor sharp manual of arms, a series of fancy marching formations with rifles flying in the air, and a contemporary dance number. At around 2 o’clock in the afternoon, the PMA Band will stage a Christmas Concert at the Justice George Malcolm Square. For both presentations, the special guest-honorees are the tri-media practitioners from the city and other parts of Cordillera led by the Philippine Information Agency–CAR, the PIO Office–Baguio, Kapisanan ng mga Broadcasters ng Pilipinas-CAR, PNA–CAR, PIO LGU Regional Office, Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club, National Correspondents Club of Baguio, Cordillera Broadcasters Alliance, ABS-CBN TV Patrol Northern Luzon together with officers and members of the Baguio Elderly Assembly (BEA). The BEA affiliates include BARP Foundation, FBASECA, PGRA Baguio Chapter, VFP Baguio District, and the USAFIP NL, WWII Veterans from the 66TH Infantry Battalion of the AFP.

I warmly invite everyone to witness the PMA Cadets’ Day at Burnham Park! After all, we are all in the immersion endeavor of bringing the PMA Cadets and the Academy closer to the people. This is what Silahis ng Pasko sa Baguio is all about, after all.

Last November 26, the launching rites marking the 44 years of the SNPB was held at the Shrine of the Brown Madonna along kilometer 7, Asin Road, Tuba, Benguet. It was highlighted with a floral and candlelight ceremony and a Thanksgiving Mass, celebrated by our NCCB Spiritual Adviser Rev. Fr. Alejandro from the San Pablo Seminary at Crytsal Cave barangay. The religious event was very well attended by a mixed group of children, senior citizens, and officers of the Shrine’s project committee led by the Leyson family from Urdaneta City, CSWDO Head Betty Fangasan, Raffy Estocapio, yours truly and my better half, Consuelo Sol. After the launching rites, a simple merienda was hosted by us. The pictures on this spread, courtesy of CSWDO Administrator Nestor Mestito, in part, show the historic endeavor.

Erratum: In the last column, KHYLA DENIESZE LIBAG's name was misspelled as KHYKA DENIESE LIBAG-E who won second runner-up, and not 3rd runner-up in the Little Ms. and Mr. Baguio pageant. Our Apologies.
