TWO New People's Army (NPA) rebels were killed in an encounter with the government forces in Sitio Balataan, Barangay Pag-asa in Alabel town, Sarangani province Friday morning, December 1.
Captain Jerry Lamosao, Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division (10th ID) Public Affairs Office chief, said that government soldiers were able to neutralize two unidentified NPA members and recovered five high-powered guns.
No government trooper was reported hurt in the clash.
Lamosao said that prior to the firefight, the troops received reports that armed men were extorting and intimidating residents in Sitio Balataan, prompting the Army unit to dispatch a team to respond and verify the report.
When the soldiers reached the area at 6:30 a.m., a clash ensued when about 15 rebels fired at them.
Aside from the bodies recovered, the troopers also saw trails of blood indicating that there were other wounded NPA members who fled to unknown direction.
Major General Noel Clement, 10th ID commander, meanwhile, called on the rebels who were only victims of the communist groups to surrender to authorities as they will help them facilitate their enrollment tothe government program that will provide them financial and livelihood assistance.
“We are saddened by the news. We are calling on to members of the NPA to lay down their arms, surrender and avail the Comprehensive Local Integration Program (CLIP). They will be given a chance to live with their families peacefully. Likewise, we are always ready to assist to the wounded terrorists who need immediate medical attention.”
