Mountain Province, La Trinidad get 2017 Gawad Kalasag awards

MOUNTAIN Province, along with the municipality of La Trinidad in Benguet, received the "Gawad Kalasag Awards" for their excellence in advocating disaster preparedness programs and strengthening the core of community resilience in Cordillera.

Mountain Province won in the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) category, while La Trinidad was hailed winner in the Municipal DRRM category.

The University of the Cordilleras claimed this year’s Higher Education Institution category, while the Lepanto National High School was named winner in the School DRRM category.

The awardees rendered exemplarily contributions in promoting contributions and initiatives in Early Warning System and Information Education and Communication Campaigns on DRRM.

National DRRMC Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad, guest speaker during the awarding, said the recognition of services of DRRM achievers is reflected on how they work in the office.

"We have seen so many things in 2017, things and events that tested to continue striving to make this country resilient... We are here to see the great things that we have done to make sure that the challenges and tragedies that we face this year will not happen again. This ceremony today highlight achievements as partners in DRRM," said Jalad.

"Gawad Kalasag Awards" or the Gawad Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan is an annual search that aims to encourage counterparts and stakeholders implement innovative and useful programs in disaster preparedness and emergency management.

This year’s awardees received a plaque of recognition, a P50,000 cash prize, and they were qualified to represent Cordillera in the national level on December 12.
