FOR a broadcaster to say that 733,000 public school children are endangered by having been vaccinated with Dengvaxia was to be imprecise.
Of that number, only 10 to 20 percent had not previously contracted dengue or had no priority history of the disease. They are the only ones put at risk, according to Sanofi pharmaceutical firm.
And it would take up to five years to find out if it would cause severe diseases. Those vaccinated have to be monitored during that period. Meantime, ways may be found to treat those who become ill.
One interesting item: in Cebu City, those vaccinated were from the general population, with no consideration of age or previous bout with dengue.
Being talked about whenever politics and the next elections come up:
■ Who’ll face Gov. Junjun Davide? With a “deep bench” (a phrase Junjun used in a radio interview) among his political rivals, it could be any of the Garcias who previously ran for governor: Gwen, Pablo John, or Winston. A non-Garcia, Rep. Samsam Gullas, is considered a “probable.” Gwen has reportedly not ruled out a senator’s seat from her 2019 options.
■ Running mate? A number of names are mentioned for each of the rival camps, including a Durano, Rep. Benhuur Salimbangon and, of course, Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale.
Other than personalities, there are imponderable factors that may influence decisions to run and party tickets. such as:
■ How the “exodus” of former LPs and members of local parties who defected to the ruling party will affect Junjun Davide’s chances: whether PDP-Laban will use its influence on the bets the converts will support for governor, or will leave the mayors and House members o decide as long as they back PDP-Laban’s national candidates. With Junjun staying as an LP though, the ruling party may decide to go all-out for local its candidates.
■ How the choice of the local opposition, now affiliated with the ruling party, will fare against incumbent Mayor Tomas Osmeña: Unlike in previous elections, Tomas might not have the party in power to help in its local fight. How much role President Duterte’s role will give himself will be a big influence on results of local battles.
