Proper nutrition is...

WHO wants to stay fit and healthy? If you want to lead a healthy life, then you have to adopt a healthy lifestyle — that is the golden rule.

How? Aside from enough rest and exercise, the body also needs proper nutrition to be mentally and physically healthy.

Herbalife Wellness and Fitness coach Miguel Rosey J. Plasabas said proper and balanced nutrition provides nutrients one needs every day to fuel their daily activities, promote and maintain a lifetime of good health, and make their best shape a reality.

"The right nutrition is balanced nutrition. Committing to these simple nutrition guidelines can put good health within reach," Plasabas said.

Proper nutrition means:

1. Weight Control. Losing weight and keeping it off takes a combination of eating fewer calories and burning more energy. Eat nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods such as fruits, vegetables and lean meats and other proteins that will fill you up. Integrate physical activity into your everyday routine.

2. Boosts energy. We have all experienced a lethargic feeling after eating too much unhealthy food. When you eat a balanced diet your body receives the fuel it needs to manage your energy level. A healthy diet includes: whole grains lean meats low-fat dairy products fruit vegetables

3. Bone and teeth strength. A diet rich in calcium keeps your bones and teeth strong and helps prevent bone loss associated with osteoporosis. Low-fat dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt; dark green vegetables; and fortified foods, such as soy products, fruit juices and cereals are good sources of calcium.

4. Combats diseases. Healthy habits help prevent certain health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. If you take care of yourself, you can keep your cholesterol and blood pressure within a safe range. This keeps your blood flowing smoothly, decreasing your risk of cardiovascular diseases.

5. Regular physical activity and proper diet also prevent or help you manage a wide range of health problems, including: metabolic syndrome diabetes depression certain types of cancer and arthritis.

"Those who think they have no time for eating healthy foods will sooner or later have to find time for illness. So, better start your day right. Eat clean, drink water, stay active and be healthy," Plasabas said.

Plasabas added that nutrition is very important for everyone, but it is especially important for children because it is directly linked to all aspects of their growth and development; factors which will have direct ties to their level of health as adults. (ICT)
