VISITING Philippine Airlines defeated host Cagayan de Oro City, 85-67 to claim the title in the 1st CdeO Asian Friendship Games Inter-Club 50-above on Sunday at the Xavier University Gymnasium here.
Tournament MVP Lucio `Bong’ Tan finished with 23 points for PAL, while PBA Legend Allan 'The Triggerman' Caidic gave 19 markers.
Joey Santa Maria and Gerry Tee also contributed with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
PAL and the host team engaged in a tight first two quarters duel that ended in a 35-all deadlock at halftime break.
But, PAL dribblers were just warming up as they put up a strong showing in the final half that began with a double digits spread that swelled to as much as 21 points.
“Tag-as ra kaayo ang PAL especially naa si Caidic,” said XU coach Rocky Calingin.
Former Ballpals MVP Bobby Diaz never let the hometown crowd down as he showed what he’s made of.
Diaz unloaded 17 points including back-to-back treys for his 3 of 4 output from the arc en route to making it to the mythical five.
“Lipay kaayo siya kay nakatilaw na siya og international nga 50 years old na siya,” said Diaz’s avid fan Andit Mendoza since time immemorial.
Mike Rosete also chipped in 13 points for Cagayan de Oro’s respectable runner-up finish.
