Man tries to kill self after hacking wife

A MAN believed to be suffering from nervous breakdown attempted to kill himself after hacking his wife inside their house in Barangay Crossing Magallon in Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental, Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Inspector Alan Reloj, town police chief, said the suspect, Rogelio Buenafe, 53, was talking to his wife Regina around 2:42 p.m. when he suddenly became unruly.

Buenafe got a cane cutter measuring 27 inches and hacked his wife, hitting her head. He then took a 20-inch cane cutter and went outside while their neighbors and relatives helped his wife be brought to a hospital.

Police arrived to negotiate with the suspect.

Rafael Racal, 30, the suspect's cousin, tried to calm him down, but he also stabbed him in his left arm. Racal sustained minor injuries.

His wife's brother, a traffic enforcer, also tried to pacify him but he threw stones at him.

Reloj said they talked to Buenafe for about two hours, but still they failed to calm him down.

As the negotiation continued, the suspect saw a 19-inch bolo and placed its handle on a tree while the pointed part faced him. He then stabbed himself in the abdomen.

He fell unconscious, prompting policemen to rescue him.

Buenafe was rushed to a hospital.

Reloj said the filing of charges will depend on Buenafe's wife, who is also confined in a hospital.
