More rain expected today as Urduja moves to Panay Island

WITH tropical storm Urduja unleashing its might on Panay Island today, the weather bureau might not lift the storm signal in Cebu.

Al Quiblat, Philippine Atmospheric, Geographical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan chief, said Cebu will continue to experience scattered heavy rain that can cause floods, landslides and sinkholes.

Quiblat said that Urduja made landfall in San Policarpio, Eastern Samar at 1:30 p.m. yesterday and will pass by Masbate and Northern Panay Island.

Since Urduja is moving slowly, it won’t reach Palawan until tomorrow. It’s expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

However, another weather disturbance is expected to enter the country on that day.

Quiblat said that Pagasa’s weather model located the storm about 2,600 kilometers east of Mindanao.

There are two scenarios: it might make landfall or dissipate, depending on how conditions change.

“We have no accurate data yet on the coming storm because it is still too far away,” he said. (EOB)
