Cops warn vs spreading fake news amid vintage bomb scare

THE Police Regional Office (PRO)-Central Visayas warned the public against spreading false news after a post in social media sparked panic among netizens about a vintage bomb found in a business process outsourcing (BPO) hub in Apas, Cebu City.

PRO-Central Visayas Director Jose Espino said that the public should immediately call their police stations to verify any information about bombs in their area.

"Don't spread it in social media. Just call the police for validation and verification," he said.

Last Saturday, a 2,000 pounds vintage bomb was found in a construction site in Lahug.

The matter was turned over to the Explosive and Ordnance Disposal (EOD) of the Special Weapons and Tactics of the Cebu City Police Office.

It was set to be extracted at 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

Superintendent Artemio Ricabo, deputy city director for administration of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) said that bomb experts from the EOD will extract it.

"It was discovered 50 feet below the ground," he said.

The vintage bomb, a remnant from the World War II, will be transported to Lutopan, Toledo City where it will be detonated.

In a Facebook post, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña assured the public that there was no need to panic.

"The surrounding buildings will be evacuated and the streets will be cordoned off. This is not the first time an old bomb has been found in I.T. Park," the post read. (JOB/SunStar Cebu)
