Unesco set to visit Baguio

DEPARTMENT of Tourism–Cordillera regional director Marie Venus Tan is preparing for a conference with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to be part of the Creative City Network next year.

Plans are underway for a Philippine visit and a workshop for stakeholders in order to fully grasp what the CCN is about after meeting at the Unesco Headquarters in Paris, France last week with Joyti Hosagrahar, Director for Creativity-Culture sector, Jesus Enrique Garcia II, Minister and Consul and Deputy Unesco permanent Representative of the Philippine Embassy and Emmanuel Robert Creative, City Secretariat.

Tan said the scheduled visit and workshop will be held in the city with the dates still to be finalized.

In her official visit, Tan formally presented to the Unesco the Baguio City Resolution of acceptance and commitment in behalf of City Mayor Mauricio Domogan and the City Council.

Tan added the Unesco CCN representatives underscored the need for an effective action plan for the city in the next four years.

The tourism official added the City Government should be tapped to help fund projects as well as the creative cities council needed to sustain the Unesco citation bestowed to Baguio City.

Baguio is now among 15 cities in the world recognized in the field of craft and folk arts.

Tan said engagement with artists and the public is the aim in keeping with the theme of the CCN and make encounters experiential in nature for each one when going to industries of the arts and crafts in the city.

The city was included in the CCN network for local works of crafts and folk arts of the Cordilleras inspired the various interplay of architecture, parks, textile, fabrics, furniture, and furnishing fashion accessories, paintings, sculpture, homes and building designs in Baguio City Under Unesco all creative cities commit to develop and exchange innovative best practices to promote creative industries, strengthen participation in cultural life, and integrate culture into sustainable urban development policies.
