Cebu City’s Swat team to get 50 additional personnel

SOME 50 persons will undergo a 45-day Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) basic training sponsored by the Cebu City Government starting next week.

Last month, the City Government set aside at least P1.8 million for the training and upgrading of the skills of the Swat team of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO). The amount will be charged to the budget of the City’s peace and order program this year.

Arnel Tancinco, chair of the City’s Peace and Order Program, said the training is part of CCPO’s disaster-preparedness plan for anti-terrorism.

“This started at the height of the conflict in Bohol Province because of the Abu Sayyaf Group. CCPO Director Joel Doria has also reiterated his request to intensify the special units (of CCPO),” he said.

Swat personnel respond to calls about bomb scares and conduct the initial search.

Tancinco added that the 50 persons will augment the existing Swat team composed of 38 personnel.

Aside from this, the City will also distribute armored vests, specialized ammunition and a vehicle to Swat.

Tancinco said that an allocation of P10 million from the City’s capital outlay will be used to purchase the vehicle.

“We’ve already bid out last week the equipment. As for the vehicle, we’re still processing the specifications. CCPO is targeting the same specification with that of the Swat team of the United States for improved services,” he said. (RTF)
