Bacolod inmate kills fellow detainee on Christmas Day

AN INMATE was stabbed to death by his fellow detainee inside the Metro Bacolod District Jail-Special Intensive Care Area (MBDJ-Sica) in Barangay Taculing, Bacolod City early Monday morning.

Senior Inspector Larry Fuentes, MBDJ-Sica warden, identified the fatality as Jesus Diane, 46, of Barangay Vista Alegre, Bacolod City.

Fuentes said the duty jail officers heard a noise inside one of the cells around 1:30 a.m., December 25.

When they entered the cell, they saw a wounded Diane on the floor. The inmate was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Fuentes said Diane was stabbed by Randy Divino, 29, of Barangay Estefania using a spoon sharpened into a knife, based on the testimonies of the other inmates.

Before the incident, Diane and Divino had an altercation when the victim reportedly offended the suspect.

Fuentes said Divino was isolated from other inmates while investigation is ongoing.

He added that Diane also has relatives among the inmates at MBDJ-Sica.

The jail warden said the filing of the criminal charge against Divino will depend on Diane's family. He noted that Diane didn’t have visitors this Christmas.

Diane was charged for illegal drugs and was committed to MBDJ-Sica in 2014.

Divino, who is facing robbery and carnapping cases, was transferred to MBDJ-Sica from MBDJ-Male Dormitory in Barangay Handumanan in 2015.

Last week, authorities seized nuisance items, including spoons used as improvised weapons, during the greyhound operation conducted inside the jail.

Fuentes said they will continue to conduct surprise inspections to avoid a repeat of similar incident.
