3 hurt in indiscriminate firing

THREE persons were injured after they were hit by stray bullets from December 16 to 26, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday.

In a report, the PNP said seven persons were arrested for illegally discharging their firearms - two police personnel from the National Capital Region, a barangay councilor from Ilocos and four civilians in Central Luzon and Central Visayas regions.

Police are still hunting five civilians from the Metro Manila, an ex-militiaman in Bicol and a police personnel from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao for the same offense.

The report said the victims are from Central Luzon, Bicol and the National Capital Region. Two stray bullets were also found in Ilocos and Caraga regions.

Among those arrested was Police Officer 1 Arnold Gabriel Sabillo of the Montalban Police Station.

Police said they have received a report about an indiscriminate firing incident at 1 p.m. on December 24 in Pasig City.

Sabillo was spotted in the area. Recovered from him was a 9 millimeter Beretta with 11 live ammunition. Three spent cartridge cases believed to have been fired by Sabillo were found in the area.

Meanwhile, the PNP also recorded eight injured persons due to firecracker-related incidents in Metro Manila, Ilocos, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas and Cordillera Administrative Region.

Six persons were also arrested for the illegal possession, use or sale of firecrackers while three are still being hunted.

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Oscar Albayalde ensured maximum police visibility on the streets for the maintenance of the peace and order especially during the New Year’s celebration, when rampant incidents of indiscriminate firing and firecrackers-related incidents are usually reported.

“Umaasa ang inyong kapulisan na magkaisa tayong lahat na ipagdiwang ang pagpapalit ng taon na mapayapa at ligtas sa anumang kapahamakan. Sinisiguro ko rin na mananatiling nakabantay ang inyong kapulisan 24/7 sa gitna ng inyong pagdiriwang upang panatiliin ang kapayapaan at kaayusan sa buong rehiyon," he said.

"We will continue to intensify police visibility especially this coming New Year celebration. We will even double our effort to maintain peace and order as we also aim for zero-indiscriminate firing. This is a no-no for our personnel, anyone who violates will be dealt with accordingly," he added. (SunStar Philippines)
