THERE were a lot of major hiccups in the inaguaral season of the PFL and I think the most glaring one was the TV deal with PTV 4, which didn’t even last half a season. I don’t know what happened and I think it’s pretty much useless to point fingers but for next year, I hope the PFL gets a reliable TV partner, not one that would cut short a live telecast to show an angry old man cursing.
The marketing of the league left much to be desired and Red Tag, the one hired to do the marketing, pretty much failed big time. They had a five-minute clip released online about the first game in Cebu--Global vs. Ceres--and pretty much played a disappearing act after that.
I heard they promised the stars but couldn’t even deliver the next door neigbhor’s Chrismast lights. Interest in the league is growing and I hope it is sustained because every one benefits from an increased interest in football.
Even as early as now, there are a lot of speculations on which club will transfer to Iloilo--the football capital of the Philippines. Some say it’s Kaya Makati, while others say it’s either Stallion Laguna or JPV Marikina. Whichever of the three will transfer will get a fanbase to die for since for decades, Iloilo has prided itself as the home to the country’s best footballers.
The home stadium, I am told, will be located at the heart of the city. I do hope that the club will not give away their tickets for free, we have to start developing a culture where fans expect to pay to see a good game.
If it’s going to be Kaya Iloilo, just imagine the rivalry it would have with Ceres Negros, that’s a Visayas Classico every Pinoy football fan should see in his or her lifetime. Could it also mean that Iloilo’s football sons like Chieffy and Ian—who have retired from the international scene but still good enough for the PFL—could see action? I certainly hope so.
As for Global Cebu, all we hear lately are of player departures. After Hikaru Minegishi, it’s the turn of Misagh Bahadoran to sign with an Asean club. Who’s left? I have no idea. I guess we will all have to play a waiting game.
I just hope the team won’t be so drastically change that it would be effectively a new team next season.
