THE first trading day of the year was marked by an all-time high.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index surged 165.71 points or 1.65 percent to close at 8,724.13. At 10:35 a.m., the index shot up 101.69 points at 8,660.11. It breached the 8,700-level after trading resumed past 1 p.m.

Value turnover was at P7.29 billion, with net foreign buying at P348.00 million.

“The back-to-back closing at new record highs on the first trading day of 2018 and last trading day of 2017 is an auspicious sign. Investor confidence and optimism were very apparent in today’s trading and we hope our market will remain robust for most of the year,” said PSE president and CEO Ramon S. Monzon. (MEA, With PR)
