SEVEN people including two children were killed, while five others were wounded, in a mortar explosion in Barangay Guban, Sirawai town, Zamboanga del Norte province Wednesday afternoon.
The Zamboanga del Norte Police Provincial Office said the blast happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, at Sitio Washington in Guban village.
The police identified the fatalities as Karding Antugon, 23; Toto Simbulaan, 15; Lloyd Simbulaan, 7; Baby Simbulaan, 5; Jufer Simbulaan, 16; Junrey Sango, 18; and Nardo Quimas.
Three of the five wounded victims were identified Paul Simbulaan, 40; Arnel Malanao, 15; and Joey Sandigon, 18. They were admitted at the Zamboanga City Medical Center.
Police investigation showed that Antugon, an employee of Sirawai Plywood and Lumber Corporation, found a mortar shell at the side of the road and brought it to the quarters of the employees.
The mortar shell exploded after Antugon grabbed a stone and tinkered it, the police added. (SunStar Philippines)
