Mayor remains cancer-free

CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña continues to be cancer-free.

In a Facebook post dated Jan. 4, the mayor uploaded a photo of him and his wife, Councilor Margarita Osmeña, together with his doctor and informed his followers of the result of his annual medical checkup in the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

“My doctor just told me that the scans have shown there is no trace of cancer in my body. This marks the ninth year since I’ve been declared cancer-free,” reads the post.

Osmeña underwent, among others, a regular blood test, CT scan and consultations with his doctors in the US.

The mayor flew to the US last Dec. 22 with his wife, their son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. They are expected to be back in the city today.

The mayor was declared cancer-free by his doctors last August 2016.

The pronouncement came eight years after Osmeña was diagnosed with stage 4 urinary bladder cancer. He has been having his regular medical checkup since 2009.

At City Hall, Executive Assistant Francisco “Bimbo” Fernandez said a text message was sent by the mayor’s wife to City Assistant Administrator Annabeth Cuizon informing them of the development.

“What’s important is that he remains cancer-free. Of course, this will also mean better quality service for our constituents,” he said. Councilor Sisinio Andales, a member of Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) also commented on the mayor’s post, calling it a positive development.

“Thank God our leader of BOPK is fit and healthy as ever. Kumbati ta against the evil forces who had ill will against Mayor Tommy. Sorry na lang Mayor Tommy is clean and healthy and he will still be our Mayor beyond 2019. Your speculation failed,” he said. (RTF)
