First week. Quick hits 13

OFFICIALLY the first seven days of the year. The tech world is buzzing still. So here are my quick hits for this week.

iPhone Discounted Batter Replacement

Before 2017 ended, Apple officially issued a statement that they were indeed slowing down older iPhones to prevent those unexpected shutdowns that a lot of old iPhone owners were experiencing. Apparently, Apple was deliberately throttling the performance of the older iPhones to stop if from drawing too much power from the aging batteries. Those overdrawing of power from the older batteries caused the older iPhones into shutting down. So, in response to user feedback, Apple now reduced its price of “out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50 - from $79 to $29 - for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later.”

Locally, I’ve seen a post from Power Mac Center about it. So if you have an iPhone that’s eligible for the replacement, now is the time for it.

Faster, Better Wi-Fi

The Verge recently posted an article about Intel’s newest Wi-Fi chipsets that should be available within the year. This new chip set -- 802.11ax -- is, of course, faster "but it’s meant to perform better in environments with lots and lots of connected devices; so things like public hotspots, but also your house if you just have a ton of phones and tablets and smart gadgets lying around."

This looks promising for everyone, especially since we’re looking at better and better delivery of land-based internet connections from DSL to fiber. Those fat bandwidths and faster connections will need to be distributed better to everyone in your house. Surely, the new routers that will use this new standard will be more expensive and, most likely, won’t be widely available this year. But, hey, it’s here and because I’ve always like to be on the bleeding edge, I’d recommend this to anyone. Anyone, who can afford it that is.

Photoshop Tutorials

There are tons of websites and YouTube channels that you can visit for tutorials. Really. Tons. I will, however, recommend checking out PiXimperfect. Tons of tutorials with lots of sensible explanations during each tutorial. Everything just makes more sense to you while watching. The concepts behind each workflow or feature in Photoshop or a tool -- all of it are explained in plain simple English without the goobledygook of highly technical terms.

Here’s a sample tutorial about creating cinematic looks which everybody seems to be into these days.
