A POLICEMAN of Bacolod City Police Office died after he was shot by a security guard while another was injured when the police officer allegedly shot him at Canonoy Beach Resort in Barangay Gargato, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental Saturday afternoon.

Killed was Police Officer 2 Britches Talapiero, 36, of Barangay Granada, Bacolod City. He was assigned at Police Station 5.

Wounded was Leslie John Dojello, 22, of Sitio Linandan, Barangay Anahaw, Hinigaran town.

Chief Inspector Jake Barila, town police chief, said Dojello had an altercation with Talapiero's younger brother after he rudely greeted the latter.

Both their groups, who were having an outing at the resort, were believed to be under the influence of intoxicating liquor.

Talapiero's group came after Dojello, who was at his group's cottage.

The policeman confronted Dojello after his younger brother told him about their encounter.

Talapiero, also believed to be drunk, drew his service firearm and shot Dojello twice in the back.

The police officer ran away, but he was chased by resort security guard Joey Belenario, 39, of Barangay Anahaw.

Barila said Belenario alleged that he tried to arrest Talapiero, but the policeman attempted to draw his gun, prompting him to fire at Talapiero, hitting him in the back.

Based on the police investigation, Talapiero had wanted to call for assistance when Belenario followed him.

Talapiero was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead while Dojello is stable and confined at a hospital in Bacolod City.

Belenario voluntarily surrendered to the police. He is detained at the station.

Investigators recovered Talapiero's government-issue Glock 17 .9mm caliber pistol with magazine loaded with 12 live ammunition; Belenario's 12-gauge shotgun; and a black pistol belt with three live ammunition. The firearms were subjected to a ballistic examination.

Barila said investigation is ongoing to determine the case to be filed against Belenario, who refused to undergo a paraffin test.
