NEWLY appointed Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for barangay affairs Martin Diño said Tuesday, January 9, that the first thing he would do as he assumes office is to order the barangay executives to submit a list of drug personalities in their areas of responsibility.
“I will make sure that all the barangays all over the Philippines will be fighting against illegal drugs,” he said during an interview.
“I will ask all the barangays to submit a list of suspected drug pushers, suspected criminals in their respective barangays. This time, may sanction kapag hindi nakapag-submit (if they don’t submit),” he added.
Diño said the barangay officials are the government’s first line of defense as they know or should know everything that is happening in their area of jurisdiction.
He noted that there are at least 5 million barangay officials in the country and they would be a big help in addressing the problem on illegal drugs particularly on intelligence gathering.
Duterte on Monday appointed Diño to the DILG as undersecretary for barangay affairs several months after he was removed as the chairman of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).
Diño was the former presidential candidate who gave up his candidacy in favor of Duterte in the May 2016 elections. (SunStar Philippines)
