From recreation to competition: CPSC raises challenge

THE Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) will up the ante on the grassroots program for the Sisters of Mary Boystown students as they enter a second year of training.

“From recreational, we’re going to elevate the training to competitive,” CPSC’s Sports Development Officer III Brando Velasquez told SunStar Cebu yesterday.

The CPSC will allocate P700,000 for the Sisters of Mary Boystown’s grassroots training for this year. The program includes the services of 18 coaches from various sports.

“In our first six to 12 months, our approach was all about sports introduction. Now that we’re entering a second year, we will provide a more competitive training,” he said.

The sports included in the program are athletics, arnis, taekwondo, basketball, volleyball and swimming.

“What we’ve been doing since last year is that we grouped them by grade level for a competition inside the school. Those who excel are tapped to join sporting events outside the school,” said Velasquez.

Velasquez said that since they started doing this, the school has produced medalists in the sporting events like the Provincial Meet and the Milo Little Olympics.

“What we like about these students, they started from zero about the sport, but after three months of training, they have produced medals,” Velasquez stressed.

The grassrooots program in the Sisters of Mary Boystown started in the second week of January 2017.

On the other hand, the CPSC is also conducting a grassroots programs to towns and cities aside from the athletes in the Sisters of Mary Boystown.

The recent will be the CPSC sports clinic for 11-below, 12 to 14 years old, and 15 to 17 years old in different towns and cities.

The clinic will tackle basketball and volleyball in line with the coming Governor’s Cup Volleyball Tournament in February and the second Governor’s Cup Cebu Province Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament in April. (RSC)
