AS WE grow we discover something new about ourselves. It must be a good thing. We evolve as the world revolves. We change as the leaves of the calendar continue to turn. If there is anything that is constant they say it is change. But the world needs not only the changes of physical features because it asks more of a deeper sense of change, a character change.
The force of evil is just so formidable that the desired change is oftentimes difficult. This force is a like typhoon that ravages and whips everyone on its way. No one gets the exemption. No one gets the privilege of being spared unless one is strong enough. Not even the people who have made the church their home and the word of God their food. Time and time again we hear church-goers who get trapped with the temptation of worldly happiness. Family heads who couldn’t resist the temptation of the flesh ignoring the consequences of breaking families they have so long built and protected exchanging it to an hour of infidelity. The less privileged rob and ransack their way out of poverty. The disillusioned and the weak mostly succumb to liberalism and misery. Evil presents itself in the most beautiful way and it hits the weakest points of people.
Without a solid moral foundation the environment is a threat to a person. The surrounding is where people apply the theories they learned from text books and from teachers’ wisdom. It is also where they pick up lessons they did not acquire and comprehend in schools. It is a learning setting for people. However when someone is confused, this environment becomes a poison to one’s morals. Our environment have created trends that ruined the lives of many especially the youth. Media has become the most influential factor of values influence. The voices of televisions and social media are now louder than the sermons on the altars and the advices at homes. Awareness of these realities can trigger intrinsic change.
When one gets out of his/her house without spiritual strength the environment can ruin him/her inside. This is what makes it dangerous. Because the change are likely for the worst. Friends are the frontlines of an environment. They introduce and expose one to things around. Friends in no time invite one to pour out all kinds of stress accumulated and because of the comfort and freedom a person feels in their company it would be too hard to refuse. When friends, the environment teach a person things that makes him/her happy one realizes there is nothing wrong with it despite the little voice yelling at the back of his/her mind. The foundation of the family works when one easily stop oneself engaging in activities detrimental to spiritual growth.
The disappointing thing is, others are convinced that change in character doesn’t mean change for the better. Where do you draw the boundary between these two? The contentment you gain in doing the right ones and the fulfillment you get from money and pleasure. In the first place, these two do not need to be separated. In fact one doesn’t need to mark the boundary because there is none at all. One could have the luxury of money yet feels fulfilled in doing good acts without deviating from these moral norms.
The country is still in a mess because of the negative issues surrounding us; the lack of respect of human life, the misguided thought of sexuality, corruption and others. The government has to force doing measures to avoid the prevalence of more of these but it’s the change of character that will cause the biggest impact. Change of character in our current situation implies consideration of the whole act giving weight to its consequences not only focusing on the temporal pleasure it provides. It is understanding that every one of us has something to contribute to attain progress and peace in our place. Without change inside, it would be too difficult for the government and other civic organizations to change the direction of the country.
