A WOMAN and her niece died while four others were injured after a tricycle collided with a truck along the highway of Barangay Camingawan, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental around 7 a.m. on Thursday.
Killed were Cecilia Villaruel, 35, and Blessed Lines Santillana, 4, both residents of Barangay Taloc, Bago City.
Wounded were tricycle driver Dominador Villaruel, 49; and passengers Leni Santillana, 46; Alexander Santillana, 20; and Leopoldo Santillana, 35, all residents of Bago City.
Senior Inspector Edgar Tonico, deputy city director for administration of Kabankalan City Police Station, said the tricycle was on its way to Kabankalan when the collision happened.
According to the statement of truck driver Camilo Margallo, 59, of Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, the tricycle was about to turn left when his truck bound for Dumaguete City hit the vehicle.
The passengers, who came from a family reunion, were thrown from the tricycle.
Villaruel and her niece succumbed to head injuries while the injured victims were brought to a hospital in Bacolod City.
Tonico said Margallo, with his two helpers, decided to leave the scene due to fear. He surrendered to Mabinay Municipal Police Station in Negros Oriental.
Margallo and his helpers were unharmed.
Tonico said there is no talk yet on the filing of charges against Margallo, who is now detained at Kabankalan City Police Station.
Teen run over by truck
A male teenager died after he was ran over by a truck on Mckinley Street, Barangay 5, Silay City at 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police identified the fatality as Ryan Jandongan, 17, of Hacienda San Isidro, Barangay Bagtic.
Records of Silay City Police Station showed that truck driver Moel Soto, 53, of Moises Padilla town, hit Jandongan while he was walking.
Jandongan succumbed to head injuries.
Soto is detained at the station.
