Wagdos, Miranda defend Milo Marathon titles amid tough route

Dabawenyo multi-titled tracksters Sonny Wagdos and Judelyn Miranda successfully defended their title after topping their respective divisions in the 39th Milo Marathon Davao Leg at SM Lanang Premier in Davao City on Sunday.

Wagdos emerged champion in the men's 21k category after checking in at 1:15:24 to beat Michael Jan Echalico (1:15:54) and Manny Marfil (1:19:32) who came in at second and third, respectively.

Wagdos admitted that he had a hard time in this year's Milo Marathon saying, "1:13 ko last year kay bag-o lang gyud ko nagbalik og training, 3 weeks lang ug ang rota sakit kay grabe ang uphill. (I finished at 1:13 last year but for this year, I was able to get back in training in three weeks while the route is difficult since there are a lot of uphill.)"

He added that he is poised to join the Milo Marathon national finals adding that he wasn't able to join in last year's 42k marathon since he joined the BIMP-EAGA games last year.

On the distaff side, Miranda clinched the title after clocking in at 1:32:55 outrunning second placer Madelyn Canter (1:48:16) and third placer Hazelvic Villanueva (1:52:03).

"Wala ko nag-expect madaug tungod sa rota. Lisud gyud ang rota sa Buhangin grabe ang uphill, (I didn't expect to win because of the route. The route is really difficult because of the uphill route in Buhangin.)" Miranda said, adding that her eyes are now set to be among the top 10 finishers in the 42k national finals in Angeles, Pampanga on December 6.

In the men's 10k category, Arlan Arbois finished at 34:25 to capture the crown. He defeated Ychon Agustin (34:30) and Michael Barrosa (36:28) who finished second and third, respectively.

Diana Memoracion (43:33), meanwhile, annexed the women's 10k title at the expense of Mae Barit (47:05) who placed second and Joylyn Quirante (48:49) who wounded up at third.

Winning the men's 5k category is Erwin Gubal (16:15) who defeated Glen Payac (17:07) and Jomar Angga (17:19) while capturing the women's title is Arlieny Onso (21:02) who raced past Rosenelyn Depillo (17:19) and Jolly Mae Gabaisen (22:07).

Edgardo Memoracion (11:22), Erwin Iting (11:26) and Alexcis Dagaang (11:26), for their part, were the top three finishers in the men's 3k category alongside Mary Depone (12:23), Arlene Onso (12:54) and Rebecca De Gracia (13:38) who occupied the top three spots in the women's 3k.

Daniel R. Aguinaldo took a share of the limelight as they were named the biggest delegation with a total of 1,414 participants while the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) was the fastest delegation after 25 of its finishers averaged 23:07.

The winners in each category went home with cash prizes, medals and trophies.
