Cebu group hosts global game jam

FOR the first time in Cebu, Red Trident Games, a local independent gaming studio, will host the Global Game Jam (GGJ), where participants get to create a digital game within a three-day time frame at The Company located in Banilad, Mandaue City.

The Global Game Jam® (GGJ) is the world’s largest game jam event (game creation) taking place around the world at physical locations.

It is similar to a hackathon focused on game development. It is the growth of an idea that in today’s heavily connected world, gamers could come together, be creative, share experiences, and express themselves in a multitude of ways using video games that is very universal.

Over 36,000 participants worldwide joined the event last year.

The event stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time exploring the process of development, such as programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression. It is all condensed into a 48-hour development cycle. The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity.

Individuals can, of course, come in and choose a group that is participating in the game.

Red Trident has constantly been involved with Cebu Game Dev in hosting meet-ups, workshops and competitions.

Clint Hennesy P. Cagang, Red Trident founding president and chief executive officer, founded Cebu Game Dev, a local game development organization for game developers in Cebu and has been working on Game Development since 2013 as a digital artist.

Cagang, 24, said the event hopes to draw and encourage aspiring developers and build friendship while making their game.

Participants will be formed into groups composed of developers, artists and programmers, and will be told about the theme of the game on Jan. 26, the first day of the event.

Cagang said they hope to have at least 50 participants but so far, around 60 have already registered. Those who want to join may register through a portal on their Facebook page until Jan. 22.

Red Trident Games envisions GGJ Cebu Site to help enrich the budding game development community and industry in Cebu, and to get the word out there that there is already an alternative hub for gamers who want to step up outside Manila.

Red Trident Games will be publishing their first game this year entitled ‘The Fabled Sky,’ with another upcoming game ready for future release.
