Policemen arrest Abu Sayyaf plantation raider

POLICE operatives have arrested another member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) involved in the kidnapping of plantation workers 16 years ago in Basilan province, an official said Saturday.

Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the arrested suspect as Faizal Sariul alias Ziad, 35, a resident of the village of Landang Laum, Sacol Island, Zamboanga City.

Galvez said Sariul was arrested at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Calle Real in the village of Mercedes.

Galvez said Sariul has standing warrant of arrest for his involvement in the kidnapping of workers on June 11, 2001 at the Golden Harvest Plantation in the village of Tairan, Lantawan, Basilan province.

The Abu Sayyaf bandits executed by beheading some of the hostages while the others have either escaped or were rescued by pursuing military forces.

Sariul was the fourth ASG member involved in the kidnapping of plantation workers that was arrested since last week in Zamboanga City.

The other were the following: Emran Ismael; Bryan Mohammad; and, Puyat Saiyadi, 45,

Ismael and Mohammad were arrested on January 12 at a shopping mall along La Purisima Street in the village of Zone III, Zamboanga City.

Saiyadi was arrested on Wednesday at Plaza Pershing along I. Magno street in downtown Zamboanga City. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
