Getting fashionable inside Seoul’s Gyeongbokgung Palace

COULD you still remember the top-rating Asianovela aired by GMA Network before called “Jewel in the Palace”? How about its setting?

The Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea, which stood along Jongno-gu since 1395, was among the filming locations of the said classic Korean drama. The palace’s kitchen served as the Sojubang (royal kitchen).

Apart from being a popular setting of “Daejanggeum,” the show’s official Korean title, there is still so much to explore inside the palace.

Upon entering the Gyeongbokgung Palace, you will be welcomed by its main gate, the grand Gwanghwamun Gate, which means “may the light of enlightenment blanket the world.” This was built in 1395 by the first king of the Joseon Dynasty.

Another exciting site to visit inside Seoul’s famous landmarks is the National Folk Museum of Korea, which houses several artifacts about the lives of Korea’s ancestors.

You will also get awed by the impressive architectural designs of the structures within the vicinity - from the gates to the ceilings and walls. Seeing the intricate and unique designs, you somehow experience the ancient Korea, years before it became one of the world’s fastest growing economies and most technologically advanced nations.

When exploring all these and other amazing sights within the palace, it is best to feel like a real Korean, right? How to do it? Wear the perfect set of Hanbok, Korea’s traditional costume. You can rent one for 19,000 to 50,000 won (around P900 to P2,500), depending on the design you choose. You can get a Hanbok from a shop nearby and use it for at least an hour, still depending on the rental fee you pay.

So, if you plan to visit Seoul soon, never forget to include Gyeongbokgung Palace in your itinerary. I assure you, you will never regret it! And yes, don’t forget to be fashionable while enjoying the ambience.

Special thanks to Korea Development Institute (KDI) and University of Southeastern Philippines-Mindanao Center for Policy Studies (USEP-MCPS) for having chosen me and another colleague to represent the country in the latest Global Distance Learning Network training. Kamsahamnida!
