Limpag: Global Cebu taps Glen Ramos

ONE of Cebu’s most accomplished coaches, Glen Ramos of Don Bosco Technological Center, is now part of the coaching staff of Global Cebu FC for the Philippines Football League 2018 season, scheduled to open in March.

Coach Glen, who is working on his AFC A license, will be joining a Global team that finished second last year despite seeing so many coaching changes. Akbar Nawas, the gifted Singaporean who steered the oftentimes undermanned Global squad to second place despite finishing fourth in the regular season, is no longer with the team.

Last year, there were three head coaches who led the team, before Nawas took over on a regular basis. Heck, at the start of the regular season, Marjo Allado was also identified as a coach, and appeared regularly in pre-match press conferences. That was before I noticed that the other head coaches sometimes send their assistant to meet the press.

Anyway, this is an astute move by Global FC, tapping one of the most recognized coaches in Cebu for the team. But make no mistake, Coach Glen isn’t just a figurehead, as he brings with him a wealth of knowledge from decades as a player and as a coach, who has won almost every trophy there is to win in the country--from the age group, to the Palaro, local men’s open and what-have-you.

Coach Glen, who was once the youngest member of the senior team, may be from the old school but he’s no old school coach. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he’s updated with the latest techniques and as evident from his now taking the AFC A license.

The first question I asked coach Glen when he shared the news was what will happen to his stints with DBTC and UC. But since he is an assistant coach, he will still be with DBTC and UC, just like how coach Marjo was still with his college team while serving the Global coaching staff under Nawas.

Coach Glen, who’s friends with the new CEO of Global, Alvin Carranza, also asked when the new owner could meet the local media, Mayor Tom and Sir Ricky Dakay as he needs the support of the community. I told him that the first move should be a meeting with Sir Ricky and the CFA, because they’ll open doors for the rest of the community and even City Hall due to sir Ricky’s connections.

Global Cebu will have a lot of new faces in the team, both on the field and off it. I’m happy that one of the new faces will be Cebu’s very own.
