Soldier dead, girlfriend unscathed in gun attack

A MEMBER of the Philippine Marine Corps was killed, while his girlfriend escaped unscathed in a broad daylight gun attack in Isabela City, Basilan, the police reported Thursday, January 25.

Superintendent Restituto Pangusban, Isabela City police chief, identified the victim as Corporal Jhunrey Lauriaga, a resident of Binuangan village in Isabela.

Lauriaga's girlfriend, who was not immediately identified, was unscathed.

Pangusban said Lauriaga was shot and killed shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday along Strong Boulevard in the village of Port Area, Isabela City.

Lauriaga and his girlfriend were onboard a motorcycle and had just arrived at the motorboat terminal when shot by a lone gunman.

Pangusban said the victim and his girlfriend were on the way to the White Beach in Malamawi Island for a picnic.

Lauriaga was hit in the head. He was rushed to a hospital but failed to reach alive.

Investigation continues to determine the motive and identity the gunman. (SunStar Philippines)
