Lamtang rehab almost complete

THE former garbage transfer area of Baguio City at Sitio Puguis, Barangay Lamtang, La Trinidad will soon complete its rehabilitation.

During an ocular visit by officials of the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office on January 24, 90 percent of the ground waste was already covered with boulders and soil

M.A. Camilo Freight Services was ordered to rehabilitate the area after an environmental case docketed as 17-ENV-0001 was filed at the Regional Trial Court Branch 10 presided by Judge Emmanuel Rasing.

The court ordered M.A. Camillo to vacate and rehabilitate the area by covering the accumulated dumped waste with compacted soil and clear the drainage canal from any debris and waste that may cause obstruction and clogging during rainy days.

The report reads M.A. Camilo will submit a compliance report to the concern offices once the rehabilitation is completed.

On January 24 a non-compliance of M.A. Camilo was duly noted by the Regional Trial Court Branch 10.

Based on the report of Director Alex Luis, chief of the Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Unit of Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera’s Environment and Management Bureau to the local court dated January 8, it said that M.A Camilo Freight Services continues to receive waste on its transfer station located in Lamtang.

In the inspection conducted by the agency from January 1 to 7, it discovered that there remained 1,468.4 tons of garbage at the transfer station and was only able to haul out 756 tons of wastes, which is a violation of the court’s order in December 14 to stop dumping.

Judge Rasing ordered a hearing on January 25 but moved to February 6. Depending on the result of the hearing, M.A. Camilo and the City of Baguio will be slapped with penalties.
